BioMar-Sagun, the joint venture between the Danish feed company, BioMar and the Turkish seafood company, Sagun, has officially opened its state-of-the-art fish feed facility located in Söke, Turkey.
First announced by the two companies in May 2014, the joint venture originally expected to be operational by the end of 2015.
Upon the 2014 announcement of the joint venture, CEO of the BioMar Group at the time, Mr. Torben Svejgaard said, “Turkey is one of the leading aquaculture nations in Europe. It still has a tremendous growth potential with excellent natural conditions for fish farming, a growing domestic fish consumption as well as good access to export markets for both fish and fish feed.”
Mainly serving Turkey’s market, the new facility will have the annual capacity to produce 50,000 tons of grower feeds for trout, sea bream, and sea bass. More highly specialized feeds such as hatchery diets and fry feed will be produced at BioMar’s other factories and will be distributed through BioNar-Sagun to buyers in Turkey as well as neighboring countries.
In addition to feed, the company also will offer fish farmers in Turkey with technical support to help in the reduction of production costs.
“Turkey is a great country with excellent natural conditions for aquaculture and a high potential for growth,” said Mr.Carlos Diaz, CEO of the BioMar Group in a company statement.
As of 2014, annual aquaculture production in Turkey had climbed to 200,000 tons, making the country the second largest aquaculture country in the EU following Norway. It is also ranked as the top sea bass producing country in the Mediterranean, and second for sea bream production behind Greece, with a 25 percent market share for sea bass and sea bream trade in the EU according to Eurofish.
Driven by the potential for growth in Turkey, the two companies plan to integrate the strengths that each company brings to the joint venture with the goal of advancing a sustainable and profitable aquaculture sector in the country.
“We are here to supply our customers with efficient feed produced at a state-of-the-art factory,” said Mr. Bora Aydemir, general manager of BioMar-Sagun. “We are here to innovate aquaculture”
